Why you should never step on cockroaches

The World Health Organisation explains why this is a health risk

We have probably all done this, but in doing so it can generate asthma attacks or allergies, among other diseases.

According to the media ‘NoticiasCaracol’, crushing this insect not only causes a horrible mess on the ground, it can spread bacteria in the environment and cause serious problems for those who inhale them. The WHO indicates that breathing the substances secreted by cockroaches, which they describe as “unhygienic scavengers in human settlements”, can cause asthma attacks or allergies.

They could also produce other diseases such as salmonellosis or others caused by streptococci and staphylococci. In addition, the bacteria could establish themselves in the intestine and cause diarrhea and fever.

Cockroaches have the capacity to support up to 900 times their own weight, which means that they often do not die at all. With one step, some people think that they no longer live, but this insect has the ability to crawl to a hiding place when danger has passed.

Even King Henry VIII would have had his work cut out with these blighters! – They can also survive headless for up to 7 days, depending on when they received their last meal. Ryan Smith, entomologist and pest control expert, reinforces this, pointing out that they have a greater capacity to survive than anything else and an adaptability that allows them to defend themselves in all different environments.

Therefore, they recommend not killing them violently as it can end up being harmful to health. And what to do about it then? Well, the best idea is to fumigate the area to eliminate the root problem and prevent the spread of these diseases – or call in a specialist.
