A Whale of a Tale

by Loraine Gostling

Antonia’s Whale.

Javea born ,Toni Marí  has many of his sculptures here in Spain, not only in Javea but in cities such as Valencia and indeed, throughout the rest of Europe, in Switzerland and Germany.

Many will have passed by his work in Montgo Verdi on the Cami Cabanes  in Javea and would have noticed the changes to the great white whale last year.

This whale holds special sentiment for Marí as in mid 2017 the sculptor suffered the loss of his mother, and so, as a tribute to her this work, it will now be named after her and will be called “Antonia’s Whale” in her memory.

When he moved to his new workshop four years ago, Marí thought what he could do to show his work to the best advantage.  He said “I wanted to create something attractive” and that’s when the idea of the whale came up. “It is an animal large enough for people to be inside,” Marí said. In addition, the sculptor highlights the symbolism of this animal, for example “the story of the prophet Jonah and the whale” and his enormous need for protection since it is the most threatened animals.

The sculptural park, in addition to the whale, will have a lake surrounding it and a fountain full of plants, a waterfall and an ant reaching 6 metres high.

Residents and visitors of Xàbia can all enjoy Mari’s work which is now reaching as far as New York !
