The story of Roman (The Brave)

by Loraine Gostling

I have been trying to write this for a while but, until now, I could never really find the right words. 😔

Residents of Jávea have, once again, shown the true strength of community spirit, as support has been continually growing for Roman, a young local boy who has been bravely facing a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

For me, this story is not just another local headline. Roman’s mum, Martina, is not only a familiar face in town, but also a friend and a valued member of our local drama group.

I have seen first-hand her warmth, her energy, and her dedication to bringing people together—qualities that make what this family is now facing, all the more heartbreaking.

Roman was diagnosed with a condition that required urgent, highly specialised treatment. His parents are now navigating an incredibly difficult path, seeking the best care possible while dealing with the emotional and financial pressures that come with such a diagnosis.

In response, the Jávea community has come together in a way that will be familiar to many who live here. From quiet acts of kindness to wider fundraising efforts, there has been a steady outpouring of support for the family.

A key source of strength during this time has been MABS Cancer Support Foundation. Their local volunteers have provided invaluable help, offering both practical and financial support and a compassionate presence when it is needed most. Their work within our community continues to make a real and lasting difference, and it is only right that their efforts are recognised.

A GoFundMe campaign was set up to support Roman’s treatment, giving people the opportunity to contribute and follow updates on his journey. Donations have been flooding in for a while and will clearly make an impact, but the challenges ahead remain significant.

As someone who knows this family personally, I would encourage anyone who can help—whether through a donation or by sharing their story—to do so.

In a town like Jávea, where so many connections run deep, moments like this remind us just how important it is to look out for one another.

Those wishing to support Roman and his family can find more information on the link at the bottom of this post.

This is a truly difficult chapter for one local family, one that most of us could not even begin to imagine—but it is also an opportunity for our community to stand together, as it has done so many times before, and show exactly what Jávea is made of.

Finally, a lovely gesture of thanks by Roman’s family…

“MABS Javea have been an amazing support to my family during our time in need. To show my support to this local charity, I have had made, silicone wristbands, which are for sale at 3€ each. All proceeds will go to MABS, so they can continue their amazing work in helping people. The wristbands are available to purchase at MABS Javea charity shop and at the Lancashire Bruja javea.
