Friday 8th January – update on COVID-19 growth trends

The number of hospital admissions in Spain has remained relatively constant over the past three weeks. However, in the UK the rate of hospital admissions is at a high level and continues to rise.

The rate of new admissions in the Valencian Community is beginning to rise and its hospital bed occupancy for COVID patients is the worst in Spain, having risen to 23.34%, from 16.12% eight days ago; this compares with the average COVID bed occupancy for Spain, which is 12.22%, compared to 9.49% eight days ago.

The rate of new admissions in Madrid, for COVID patients has risen – 12.50% of hospital beds have COVID patients today, compared with 11.54% eight days ago.Closer to home, the GVA site reports that the fourteen-day rate for new cases in Jávea has fallen this week. The GVA site reports 130 new cases in the past two weeks, compared with 154, seven days ago.

Denia’s numbers are very bad – 308 new cases in the past two weeks compared with 191, seven days ago. Denia hospital has today suspended all non-urgent surgery and consultations and the infection rate across the whole of the Marina Alta is very high. The graphs for France, Italy and the Netherlands use Worldometer figures. The Worldometer numbers include both hospital new cases and community testing so they are showing a more pessimistic trend than what is actually happening with their hospital admissions. The trends in Italy and France have stabilised, and the trend in the Netherlands is now falling. The next post on the group will be on Friday 15th January.

Stay safe.John Wilson
